Saskatoon Trades Jobs in 2026: Jansen Buildout and the Mining Capital of Canada Hires
Saskatoon trades hiring guide — BHP Jansen potash mine (first production now expected mid-2027), Cameco uranium, Mosaic and Nutrien potash, Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission framework, and wage ranges.
Free for workers · city-specific hiring context
Saskatoon doesn't get marketed as a trades town. The mining and uranium sector that surrounds the city does most of its work fly-in / fly-out from rotation hubs across the province, so the labour market is less visible than Calgary or Edmonton. But the dollars flowing through the city in 2026 are enormous.
BHP's Jansen buildout — the single largest private investment in Saskatchewan history — is still a major 2026 construction and commissioning draw, but BHP now expects first production in mid-2027. Cameco, Mosaic, and Nutrien continue to expand and turnaround. And Saskatoon itself is the engineering, head-office, and fly-in hub for almost all of it. For a tradesperson in the right specialty, Saskatoon is one of the best wage / cost-of-living ratios in the country.
What's actually hiring in Saskatoon right now
BHP Jansen — first production now expected mid-2027. The Jansen potash project is approximately 140 km east of Saskatoon. BHP's total investment in Jansen is approximately $14 billion CAD — the largest private investment in Saskatchewan history — and BHP says production is expected to begin in mid-2027. Once Stage 1 and Stage 2 are fully ramped up, Jansen is expected to produce approximately 8.5 million tonnes of potash per year. The construction and commissioning surge through 2026 — final mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, mill, processing plant, and logistics scopes — remains one of the most concentrated trades pulls in the country right now. Saskatoon is the headquarters and fly-in hub.
Cameco — Cigar Lake, Key Lake, McArthur River. Cameco's uranium operations in northern Saskatchewan run on fly-in rotations from Saskatoon and Saskatoon-region airports. McArthur River / Key Lake and Cigar Lake remain core northern Saskatchewan operations, with maintenance, capital, and turnaround work pulling industrial trades.
Mosaic — Esterhazy K1/K2/K3, Belle Plaine. Mosaic is one of the largest potash producers globally. K3 and surrounding operations require continuous maintenance and capital. Industrial millwright, electrician, instrumentation in particular.
Nutrien — Cory, Allan, Lanigan, Rocanville, Vanscoy. Nutrien operates six potash mines in Saskatchewan. Cory is closest to Saskatoon and is a major employer of Saskatoon-resident industrial trades. Maintenance and capital draw runs continuously.
Saskatoon hospital and ICI. Royal University Hospital, St. Paul's Hospital, Saskatoon City Hospital — all part of the Saskatchewan Health Authority capital pipeline. Plus a new Children's Hospital recently completed and ongoing expansion programs.
Saskatoon residential and commercial. Steady residential build, mid-rise commercial, downtown revitalization, University of Saskatchewan campus expansion.

How Saskatchewan certification works
The Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission (SATCC) administers apprenticeship and journeyperson certification. Most trades carry Red Seal endorsement. The province operates under the Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Act.
For mining and uranium work specifically:
- Common Safety Orientation (CSO) for Saskatchewan mining sites
- Site-specific orientations for each operation — Jansen, Cigar Lake, Key Lake, McArthur River, Cory, Esterhazy, Rocanville, Vanscoy each have their own
- Confined space, fall protection, WHMIS 2015, H2S Alive (for some operations)
- Underground mining ticket / Hard Rock Mining Awareness for underground potash and uranium
- CSTS-09 safety
- Radiation safety training — for Cameco uranium operations specifically. Most operations sponsor this for new hires
- CWB welding tickets for welders — particularly important for process piping work
Mining work in Saskatchewan is heavily union — USW (Steelworkers), UNIFOR, Operating Engineers, Boilermakers — at most operations. Contract maintenance work tends to be Building Trades.
What you'll earn in Saskatoon
Hourly journeyperson base. Mine direct employment with overtime and rotation premiums is where the real money is. ICI in the city sits in the middle.

Saskatchewan has one of the strongest wage-to-cost-of-living ratios in Canada. A Saskatoon-based industrial millwright at a potash mine can take home more annually than the headline rate in Vancouver while spending less than half as much on housing.

The Saskatoon nuance
Saskatoon's trades market lives on the rotation. Tradespeople work two weeks on / two weeks off at a remote site, fly back to a Saskatoon (or rural Saskatchewan, or even northern Alberta) home base. Recruiters here are screening for rotation experience, mine site experience, and willingness to travel before they screen on trade. A welder with five years of fly-in mine experience is more valuable in Saskatoon than a welder with twice as many years of pure ICI experience.
Jansen's expected first production in mid-2027 will reshape the labour market temporarily — construction crews dropping off, operations crews ramping up. Both phases need experienced trades but in different mixes.
Where to start
Saskatoon and Saskatchewan mining recruiters filter on Red Seal endorsement, mine site / rotation experience, specific employer name flags (Cameco, Mosaic, Nutrien, BHP, Cigar Lake, McArthur River, Jansen, Cory, Esterhazy), and safety stack. Surface those on your resume.
